Be-A-Scout - The Boy Scouts of America have launched a new website to assist families in learning about the Scouting program and finding local Packs, Troops and Crews in their local area. Visit www.beascout.org and check out this new recruiting tool. One key feature of the site is an interface with Google Maps to visually show them where units are located in proximity to their address. Unit leaders are asked to log into MyScouting to update the information that is available for their unit. Click on "Be A Scout" in the Unit Tools menu of MyScouting. Don't forget to update the tracking status of your unit's BeAScout contacts through MyScouting! |

District Pinewood Derby - The Wapehani District Pinewood Derby is fast approaching and we would like to invite you to attend in this spectacular event. Scouts come from all around to compete in one of the biggest races in the Cub Scout program! It will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the College Mall in Bloomington. All Cub Scouts in Wapehani Dis-trict are invited to match their cars up and show off your skills and sportsmanship with your friends in this race. We will even have races for you "old timers and siblings." Contact Kevin Trojan at ktrojan@bsamail.org to volunteer or for additional information. For your convenience, we have put this event on Double Knot to register on line. Leader Recognition Dinner - Wapehani would like to invite all unit leaders and family to join us at our annual Leader Recognition Dinner. At this time, we will recognize some of our outstanding leaders for their accomplishments over the past year. This Scouting program can only be possible with your time and dedica-tion and Wapehani District wants to make sure you know that we appreciate all that you do for this organization! It will be held at Ellettsville First United Methodist Church at 6:00 pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to honor our district's leaders for their commitment and dedication to the Scouting program. Please bring your family for a great night out. Leadership Training - Please remember that now leader position-specific training is available for all Cub Scout leaders online. In addition, courses completed online will automatically be added to your training record, if your MyScouting profile includes your BSA member ID number that is found on your membership card. Additional training courses are being added all of the time, but some courses simply work much better in a classroom or outdoor setting. Be sure to consult the calendar for our instructor-led training courses. We will be hosting a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader Training on March 3rd at Ellettsville First United Methodist Church. Spring Camporee/Scout-O-Rama - Mark your calendars for the upcoming Spring Camporee/Scout-O-Rama located at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. Last year's Scout-O-Rama was brought back by popular demand and I can see why! We had many Scouts and Scouters attend this event to dis-play some of the things that they were learning in their units. Some of the events were cooking, knots/rope making, a rope bridge, a Pinewood Derby track, totems, and much more! This event will allow your Scouting unit to meet others from all over the district in a fun filled weekend of activities and events. All Scouts are invited to participate and encouraged to have an activity or display to show off. We will have more informa-tion and packets will follow at monthly Roundtable meetings. We will also be hosting a Boy Scout and Venture Leadership training session at this event. New Merit Badges - Merit badges are a great part of the advancement program that the Boy Scouts offer to all Scouts interested in trying new things or perfecting current interests. Earning a merit badge will allow a boy to learn the basics of an area of interest with the guidance of a counselor to explore all the many skills, trades, or hobbies that are around us. From Animal Science to Public Speaking to Wilderness Survival, we have it all! Last year, the Boy Scouts introduced four new merit badges to the list bringing the count up to 127 avail-able areas of interest. The new badges include Chess, Robot-ics, Geo Cache, and Composite Materials. Riley Callahan from Troop 121 completed the Robotics Merit Badge in a program offered at Indiana University approved by his Merit Badge Counselor. In this program, he was of-fered the opportunity to build a robot and learn about how they work and a taste of what it would be like to do this as a profession. In speaking with his dad, Brian, Riley gained a lot of knowledge and had a great time earning this merit badge. He is excited to pro-mote this experience to the rest of his troop so be looking for some information soon. Roundtable Meetings - The Districts Roundtables are held on the second Thursday of every month. It is very important that all Scouting Units have at least one representative attend but all are welcome. This is the time that district and council infor-mation along with special subjects important to your Units are passed out and discussed. We also offer training opportunities and a chance to get to know other Scouters in the area. |
